Analyzing the Language of Bias

Learn about the systematic principles underlying linguistic expressions of bias. The course is based both on existing academic research in the fields of linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics (which I have taught at Berkeley, Northwestern, and UCLA) and on original research done on language and discrimination in the workplace.

Dr. Suzanne Wertheim founded Worthwhile Research & Consulting as a venue for linguistic anthropologists to address both academic and real-world problems. After receiving her Ph.D. in Linguistics from University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Wertheim held faculty positions at Northwestern, University of Maryland, and UCLA. In addition to teaching thousands of students, Dr. Wertheim has been an invited and plenary speaker around the United States and in Europe, presenting research on bilingualism, language and gender, and anthropology and artificial intelligence. She has done fieldwork with speakers as diverse as Tatar nationalists in the former Soviet Union, Native Americans in California, and comedians in Los Angeles.

SMBA Members can earn 1 hour of participatory credit and 1 hour of legal ethics for attending the lunch program. Seasons 52 will provide a buffet style lunch for $28 per person (gratuity included). Seasons 52 offers $8 valet parking, or you can park in nearby city parking structures. If you stay after the presentation, you can meet fellow attendees. Non-members have the option of either becoming a member or paying a $25 administrative fee in order to receive MCLE credit.
