As the calendar pages turn to a new year, there are three new programs to give children and adults with disabilities in California more options and independence than ever before.
The new CalABLE program operates out of the state Treasurer's office. ABLE accounts are a new savings option that allow individuals who became disabled before the age of 26 to save up to $100,000 in a tax-advantaged investment account without jeopardizing certain government benefits.
For regional center consumers, the new statewide Self-Determination pilot program for the first 2,500 clients gets underway. This program will provide regional center consumers and their families with more freedom, control and responsibility in choosing services and supports to help them meet their objectives.
And, in the greater Los Angeles region, JLA Trust is launching its new L.I.F.E. Planning (Long-Term Inclusion, Fulfillment and Empowerment) which will guide families through the development of a person-centered comprehensive long-term and short-term action plan.
