Constitutional Rights Foundation has just released the 2019-2020 Mock Trial case, People v. Matsumoto. Over 2,500 high school and middle school students are preparing to present their case of People v. Matsumoto this November in the courtrooms of Stanley Mosk Courthouse.

We would like to invite you to join us to share your passion by volunteering your knowledge and time to the next generation of future professionals.

VOLUNTEER MOCK TRIAL JUDGES NEEDED!

UCLA’s Undergraduate Mock Trial Program seeks volunteer judges, attorneys or law students to serve as Presiding Judges or Scoring Judges for the two Los Angeles area collegiate mock trial tournaments of 2018:

1. The 2018 UCLASSIC Mock Trial Tournament on January 13 – 15, 2018 (at UCLA). Trials will be on Saturday PM, January 13 (Round 1), Sunday AM & PM, January 14 (Rounds 2 & 3) and Monday AM, January 15 (Round 4) at UCLA.

2. The 2018 Opening Round of the National Championship on March 10 – 11, 2018 (at the Santa Monica Courthouse). Trials will be Saturday, March 10 (AM - Round 1, PM - Round 2) and Sunday, March 11 (AM - Round 3 and PM - Round 4). No law students or non-attorneys can judge in this tournament.

General Mock Trial Program Information

The UCLA Mock Trial Teams participate in the American Collegiate Mock Trial Association program. Over 600 teams from colleges around the nation compete by presenting the Plaintiff (Prosecution) or Defense side of a mock civil or criminal case, including Opening Statements, Direct & Cross Examination of witnesses and Closing Arguments. Students must follow the rules of evidence of the “State of Midlands” (an imaginary state that follows the Federal Rules of Evidence). Many California universities field teams at these tournaments, including UCLA, USC, Cal, Stanford, UCI, USCD, UCSB, Cal-Poly and the Claremont colleges. Teams from around the nation will also compete at UCLASSIC.

2018 UCLA Tournaments Information

40 teams will compete at the January UCLASSIC Tournament and the top 24 teams in the Western U.S. will compete at the March tournament. The students will present the Prosecution or Defense side in the case of People v. Hendricks. This criminal case involves an a defendant charged with the attempted murder of his or her lover’s spouse.

Trials will be held at the UCLA (UCLASSIC tournament in January) or at the Santa Monica Courthouse (March tournament). Free parking and meals will be provided to volunteers. We seek attorneys, judges and law students to volunteer as trial judge and/or scoring judge in each trial. The trials are a fun and rewarding experience for volunteers. For attorneys with aspirations to sit on the bench one day, it is a great opportunity to be a bench officer in a very realistic case. We try to accommodate your preference for serving as Presiding Judge (ruling on evidence & exhibits) or Scoring Judge. You may volunteer for more than one trial. Please share this flier with other members of your firm or legal organization.

Volunteer Information

Trials are strictly timed and typically last 2.5 hours. Volunteers will receive a link containing the Rules of Evidence, the witness affidavits and the mock trial rules. You need not prepare or read any documents in advance of the trials. One trial judge (must be an attorney or judge) will preside over each trial (as the bench officer overseeing the trial and making evidentiary rulings). The winning team is based on total points received from scores awarded for Openings, Closings, Examinations and Witness Performances. We will outline these procedures at the training sessions prior to each round and will send e-mails prior to the trials with detailed information. There is no Pre-Trial hearing, as in high school competitions.

Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment: Frank G. Wells Environmental Law Clinic: Clinical Supervising Attorney and Project Director

The UCLA School of Law is seeking a highly energetic individual with environmental litigation practice experience to serve as Clinical Supervising Attorney and Project Director for the Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the Frank G. Wells Environmental Law Clinic.

The Director will contribute to advocacy-oriented service and teaching programs and projects as well as the Institute’s research programs. The attorney will manage legal work, including litigation and administrative advocacy, and supervise students in the Frank G. Wells Environmental Law Clinic and other experiential learning contexts; develop and implement strategic research; supervise interns and volunteers; and perform other tasks in support of the Emmett Institute and the Wells Clinic, as necessary.

At the direction of, and in collaboration with, the Emmett Institute co-executive directors and co-faculty directors, the Director will develop and execute advocacy-related service projects; be responsible for existing public service projects and programs; participate in designing and advancing a range of policy and legal initiatives; assist in developing curriculum as well as teach; develop and select clients and cases with sound pedagogical value; mentor and provide support and guidance to students in the Clinic; act as a case manager and attorney within the Clinic; act as case manager for public service advocacy projects; foster relationships with lawyers and organizations, including environmental and environmental justice advocacy organizations to build and continue the work of the Clinic and the Institute in Los Angeles and nationwide; and meaningfully engage with communities and advocates on important issues.

The Emmett Institute is dedicated to creating and advancing legal and policy solutions to climate change and other environmental challenges, and to training the next generation of leaders to address these issues. The program fosters informed debate and analysis to educate the public, policymakers, business leaders, and others on critical environmental issues. The Wells Clinic, a program within the Institute, trains law students in environmental lawyering. Under the supervision of experienced environmental lawyers, students work on behalf of environmental and community groups on litigation and regulatory matters. Both the Institute and the Clinic rely on advocacy, in collaboration with partners, as one of the tools to accomplish their goals.

The ideal candidate will have significant legal experience in environmental law and climate change or in related fields. Previous experience teaching in a law school clinical setting is also desirable but not required. Candidates must have a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, plus admission to the California Bar or willingness to sit for the California Bar.

This is a full-time, year-round, academic, non-tenure track position. The salary and level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This appointment is subject to the rules and regulations of the Regents of the University of California, which are mostly embodied in The UCLA CALL and the University of California Academic Personnel Manual. The Santa Monica Bar Association recently held its annual summer elections at the Red O Restaurant in Santa Monica, voting in business litigation attorney Jennifer Millier as President Elect and two new Board of Trustee members, probate litigation attorney Megan Waugh and CEO of a medical expert consulting firm Ashleigh Bhole.

Jennifer is an established trial attorney representing employers and manufacturers in disputes involving business, employment and real property matters.

Me gan’s practice focuses on a variety of civil litigation matters including elder law, probate, wills, trusts, and conservatorships.

Ashleigh is an attorney and the founder of Ace Callen, LLC, a medical expert management and consulting firm. Prior to starting her own company, Ashleigh was with a national law firm practicing in the areas of healthcare and insurance fraud and complex commercial litigation.

Attorney Volunteer Opportunity to Help Students at the 2017 National Mock Trial Championship Tournament April 21-23, 2017 in Downtown Los Angeles

If you have ever wanted to help aspiring attorneys, volunteer your time or wonder what it would be like to be a judge, now you have the opportunity.

For the first time in the 33-year history of collegiate mock trial, the 2017 National Championship Tournament will be held in California.

On behalf of the UCLA Mock Trial Program and the American Mock Trial Association, you are invited to volunteer as a presiding judge or scoring judge at the 2017 National Championship Tournament. The DTLA Championship Tournament will be April 21-23, 2017 at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Los Angeles, featuring the top 48 teams in the nation. Volunteers must be attorneys or judges, but you need not have trial experience.

Presiding judges rule on objections and introduction of exhibits, while scoring judges will rate the student performances. Parking and meals will be included.

The National Championship Tournament for collegiate mock trial will be held on April 21-23, 2017 at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse. Rounds will be Friday afternoon (4/21), Saturday morning or afternoon (4/22) or Sunday morning (4/23).

ABOUT FOREST WHITAKER

Forest Whitaker has long been known as one of Hollywood’s most accomplished and versatile actors, having received the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2007 for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland.” What may be less well-known is his social activism. Believing that communities and nations must heed the voices of their diverse and vibrant youth, Forest Whitaker established the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative, which is committed to providing educational tools and better living conditions to young women and men living in regions touched by violence, war, and poverty.

In addition to serving as founder and CEO of Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative, Mr. Whitaker is co-founder and chair of the International Institute for Peace, has been designated a UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation, and, in 2016, was appointed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Advocacy Group.

Mr. Whitaker’s artistic and humanitarian contributions have been widely recognized at home and abroad. In 2001, he was awarded theHumanitas Prize. In 2007, he received the Cinema for Peace Award for his ongoing advocacy for child soldiers and his work with inner-city youth. In 2008, he was a member of President Obama’s Urban Policy Committee. In 2012, in recognition of his contributions to the values embodied by the United Nations, Mr. Whitaker received the United Nations Correspondents Association’s Advocate of the Year Award. In 2013, Boston University’s Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center named him a Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellow. That same year, he was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in recognition of his work serving those affected by conflicts and violence. In 2014, he started collaborating with the Office of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict as an Advocate for Children Affected by War, a topic on which he was invited to speak before the UN Security Council in September of that year.

Mr. Whitaker believes that ordinary people can and must come together to change the world. In his own words, “Even a seemingly small action can cause ripples that make an enormous impact."

David G. Geffen is an engaging and motivating speaker and educator who appears as an expert and commentator on television and radio, in magazine and newspaper interviews, and in film documentaries. No matter the media or the size of the group, he connects with the audience, relying upon humor and stories to illustrate, stimulate, and entertain.

Amber Roller is an associate in the Labor and Employment practice in the firm’s Los Angeles office. Ms. Roller received her undergraduate degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). She went on to receive her J.D. from Southwestern Law School in 2010, where she graduated with honors. While attending Southwestern Law School, Ms. Roller was a member of the Southwestern Law School Moot Court Honors Program. Prior to practicing Labor and Employment, Ms. Roller practiced civil litigation in the area of insurance defense.

Anthony Goldsmith is a civil rights attorney and member of the legislative committee of Californians for Disability Rights.

UCLA Needs Attorney Volunteers For Santa Monica Mock Trial

UCLA hosts an annual Mock Trial Tournament for the benefit of California schools. Local and national mock trial tournaments were held at the UCLA Anderson School and Law School in January. The Santa Monica Courthouse has been selected as the venue for the Opening Round of the National Championship (ORC) to be held March 12-13, 2016.

Volunteer as a presiding trial judge or as a scoring judge at the Santa Monica Courthouse.

This tournament determines which 6 teams in the Western U.S. will qualify for the National Championship. Presiding judges will rule on objections and introduction of exhibits, while scoring judges will rate the students' performances.

This year's case involves a criminal prosecution of a bribery case. No prior criminal or trial experience is necessary. You'll see college students present Openings, Closings, Direct Examinations, and Cross Examinations. Some of the top teams in the nation will compete, and most of the California colleges will be there (UCLA, USC, UCI, Cal, Stanford, etc.). This tournament helps prepare all the local schools for the national tournaments.

Speed Mentoring with UCLA School of Law

On Wednesday, February 17, 2016, from 6:00-7:30pm in Room 1314 of the UCLA School of Law, you are invited to meet a future generation of young attorneys, share professional experiences, and help students transition into the legal profession. There will be four 15-minute rounds of speed mentoring sessions where mentors will get to meet four different groups of students during the evening. At the end, there will be an opportunity for students to mix and mingle with any of the attorneys with whom they did not meet during the speed mentoring sessions. Light refreshments will be served. If you would like a UCLA School of Law student to shadow you for a day at your office or in court to experience what it is really like to be in practice, please sign up HERE by Friday, January 29. UCLA School of Law will match you with a student interested in your practice area focus, and you can directly coordinate a time to be shadowed. This will provide invaluable experience for law students because they will see firsthand seasoned attorneys in practice, as well as allow students to explore various practice areas. Additionally, if you would like your assigned student to accompany you to a bar association or another networking event in addition to shadow you at work, please indicate so on the link above. Students will greatly benefit from meeting your contacts and learning to network with professionals.

Fingerman Decodes Mediation

In this presentation, Mark Fingerman gave practical tips on the key qualities of a mediator to consider in the selection process and the core elements of mediation preparation, including inherent ethical factors.

Installation Dinner With California Secretary of State

The SMBA Board of Trustees hosted the annual Installation Dinner with keynote speaker California Secretary of State, Alex Padilla. Secretary Padilla was raised here in Los Angeles County, in the working class community of Pacoima. In 1999, he was elected to serve on the Los Angeles City Council and served three terms as Council President. From there he served in the California State Senate (2006-2014). As Secretary of State, he is committed to modernizing the office, increasing voter registration and participation, and strengthening voting rights.

The Judges and Commissioners of the West District invited members of the Santa Monica Bar Association and their guests to a luncheon presentation on Thursday, September 17, at the Santa Monica Courthouse between the hours of noon and 1:30pm. The Hon. Lawrence Cho moderated the panel of bench officers that included: Supervising Judge of the West District, the Hon. Lisa Hart Cole; the Hon. H. Chester Horn; the Hon. H. Jay Ford; the Hon. Nancy L. Newman; Comm. Matthew St. George; the Hon. Norman P. Tarle; the Hon. Bobbi Tillmon; and the Hon. Mark E. Windham. They gave an informal and entertaining discussion on:

“Say This – Don’t Say That! What We Really Want to Know (and not know) About Your Case.”

The discussion covered bench officers’ pet peeves and what information they found to be really helpful (or unhelpful) in making decisions. Here are some of the highlights.

Being a lawyer provides you the opportunity to help others. This should be your compass. You can be civil. You can cooperate with opposing counsel AND you can zealously advocate for your client. These are not mutually exclusive activities. You can settle early. Consider early mediation or other attempts to settle cases just make sure you have the discovery you need. Judges speak to each other about lawyers and share their impressions of the lawyers who appear before them. Every time you or your brief enters the courtroom, you are building your reputation for telling the truth (or not telling the truth). If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t misstate the law and don’t mislead the Court; admit that you don’t have the answer, promise to find it out, and find it out. No single case is worth destroying your reputation.

Be polite. Talk to the courtroom staff as if you were talking directly into the Court’s ear. Whatever you do, don’t be late if a jury is empaneled.

Be brief. Both in written submissions to the Court and in all oral presentations to the Court and especially to the jury, get to the point.

Finally, make it too easy for the Court. Make your points easy to read and understand. Tab your exhibits (although if filing downtown, tabs get in the way of scanning). LASC rule 3.4(b) allows you to lodge exhibits that do not need to be filed. Filing records 2 feet thick renders your case’s court file impossible to navigate.
